Write down all the goals for 2017

Setting goals for 2017As long as I can remember, I’ve always dreamed big. Work as a pilot. Own a house with a pool and a red Ferrari in the driveway. Travel the world. Be the female version of Indiana Jones. Become a rockstar.

Too bad I can’t sing.

As I get older (I can’t believe I said that..) I realise that when it comes to our dreams, we will never achieve them if we don’t work towards them. So I decided to work towards my biggest dream. Become Lara Croft. Travel the world.

At university they like to bother us with reflection reports that force us to set SMART goals. These are goals that are specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and time-bound.

Although I used to hate those reflection reports, I have to admit I’m starting to see the value in being goal-oriented in everyday life.

As the year comes to a close, I’m reflecting on the last year and looking forward to the one ahead. As I was vaguely pondering the future, the ProBlogger newsletter dropped in my inbox and mentioned setting goals. Damn. I took it as a sign and decided to write down some blog, travel, and personal development goals for 2017.

The smart stuff (wake up, brain!)

Look at the sky, set some goals
I wouldn’t mind working from here…

The largest goal for next year is to finish my master’s degree in Leisure, Tourism & Environment within the first half of 2017. After that this site will be renamed The Sandra Stories, MSc 😉

I’m also enrolled in quite a few online courses in the first few months of the coming year. Topics include social media marketing, entrepreneurship, blogging, and photography. Hopefully there’s some space left in that brain of mine.

I also noticed that I started to read less and less books throughout the years. Even though I love reading. That’s why I’ve decided to read 12 books next year. One a month.

It sounds like a ridiculously small goal for someone that read through the entire local library at age eleven. However, it’s small enough to do on the last night of the month if need be. So I know I can get it done.

The interesting stuff (or, blog & work goals)

Aside from studying all the things I mentioned above, it’s time to move forward. Since I’m getting old and everything, it’s time to make a plan (as we say in South Africa) to join the grown-up world and start adulting.

This means finding a job (meh) and think about careers (yay). It’s becoming more clear that I either need a job with 6 months vacation time, or I need to figure out a career path that let’s me work wherever I want in the world. Or wherever there are coffee shops with free wifi.

This is one of the reasons why I’m actively working on several online courses relating to social media marketing and management.

The fun stuff (or, travel the world)

setting goals for life
… or here.

I’m spending the first two months of 2017 with friends in South Africa. Two more trips are being planned right now that I’m really excited about. I’m going snowboarding with a few of my girlfriends, when I get back from South Africa.

Then I also want to visit the Traverse bloggers conference in London in April. Hopefully I can make some friends with similar interests and goals.

Also, it’s London.

Then, for graduating university & being a grown up (although not necessarily behaving like one), my parents are taking me on a family trip. I really hope to go gorilla trekking, but we’ll see what we can all agree on.

In addition, I still hope to go to Australia on a working holiday visa. Although looking at all the other plans, that might remain a goal for 2018…

Have you set specific goals for 2017? Please share in the comments!

    1. Hahaha that’s awesome! I just started reading Wild (by Cheryl Strayed) and am enjoying it so much. If I finish it tomorrow I think it counts towards the total 😉 Also, yes, travel, please!

  2. Sandra, all this sounds great. I have also enrolled in some blogging related courses and am working towards my yearly goals for the blog. I do not read that much either (even though I love to read). I think all my time is spent blogging and traveling (not that I am complaining). Wish you the best in the new year! #MondayEscapes

    1. Happy new year! This is actually the first year I’ve set some serious goals for myself. I think it’s great to go with the flow, which is what I normally do… So we’ll see how this goes

  5. Goal setting is very cliche but I’m sure it’s helpful for reaching your targets. I set some goals as well, and it helps me to stay focused. You mention you’ve enrolled in some online courses. Which one? I’m especially curious about the one on blogging. #mondayescapes

    1. I agree goal setting is cliche, but I’ve found it much easier to do in my personal life than for anything work or study-related. I have just completed the Shaw Academy course on blogging and content management, which was fun but fairly basic. I am also enrolled in the Elite Blogging Academy (which is an investment but compared to uni it’s not so bad, which is how I sold it to myself anyway..)

      1. Hi Sandra,
I’m very curious, how’s the Elite Blogging Academy going? Learning new stuff, do you already see some results?

        1. Hi Nanouk, I have to admit that I think it wasn’t the right course for me. Although I have learned some important things, the format just doesn’t work for me. It’s too easy to not work on it for weeks. I think the results I’m seeing aren’t related to the course.

I’ve heard incredible things about South Africa and hope to visit one day. Sounds like you have a fantastic year ahead and who doesn’t dream about being Lara Croft 🙂
