I have a love/hate relationship with collecting souvenirs. Every time I go on a trip, I feel like I need to bring something back. But what?! This means that throughout the years I have collected a random assortment of Vietnamese lanterns, bracelets, posters and clothing. Then the stuff that others bring back for you, keychains, bottle openers, pen and whatnot. For a while I brought back art from all my travels. Having a high ceiling made my gallery wall awesome. Until I moved and had nowhere to leave all of that art. Thus, after a few years I decided that enough was enough and I stopped buying souvenirs…

how to choose a souvenir to collect

Until inspiration struck when I was vagabonding throughout Southern Africa. We were sending postcards to our girlfriends back home and I thought: “How cool would it be if I came home and had a postcard?”

Wait.

Why couldn’t I just send myself one?

So that’s what I did. From then on, from every country I have visited, I have sent myself a postcard. I’ve written a little story and jokes that relate to trip on the back and posted it to my home address. I was so happy when I came home and at least one piece of mail that wasn’t tax-related was waiting for me!

Sadly, one of my souvenirs is still missing in action and I do not believe it will ever arrive. That might be a risk when you’re collecting souvenirs that depend on mail. Also, I didn’t send myself one from Belgium, since I couldn’t find a proper postcard. What’s that about, Ghent?!

Either way, I collect all of these souvenirs in a small picture folder. Looking back through the post cards of recent trips makes me really happy.

What is your favourite souvenir to collect or bring back from your trip? Please let me know in the comments, I love hearing from you.

Cheers,

Sandra
